Here at Aberdeen Courses we offer a wide range of language courses. We usually schedule our Foreign Language Group Classes to run in blocks of 8 weeks. Classes take place one evening per week from 6.30-8.30pm this is because the majority of people who study foreign languages have full-time work commitments during the day, so evening classes are generally more suitable. However, there is also the option of scheduling private classes.
In addition, if you and a group of colleagues or friends would like to get together and organise your own class, we'd be happy to accommodate

Part-Time Evening Classes
- Courses take place in the evenings so you can come after work.
- They are held in our Language Centre on 48A Union Street, Aberdeen once a week from 6.30-8.30pm.
- Classes run in standard blocks of 7, 8, 10 or 11 weeks.
- We have regular classes in many foreign languages at different levels, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Russian and many more.
- You can join at any time if you are at the same level of a group class.

SPANISH
Why learn Spanish?
- Over 330 million people speak Spanish.
- It is one of the easiest foreign languages to learn.

ITALIAN
Why learn Italian?
Italian is a Romance language spoken as a first language by about 63 million people, primarily in Italy. In Switzerland, Italian is one of four official languages. It is also the official language of San Marino and the Vatican City.
Throughout the world, Italian is the fifth most taught non-native language, after English, French, Spanish, and German.
Travelling to Italy is intensely pleasurable, with about everything you can dream of: the richest archaeological sites in Europe, entire Roman towns miraculously preserved for you to visit, cathedrals, roman circuses, monasteries, paintings, sculptures, lovely historical towns, immaculate beaches and ski resorts.
But Italy is not only about the past. Italian gastronomy is one of the most attractive in the world, with hundreds of varieties of cheeses, breads and wines. Hundreds of highly creative Italian cooks create new dishes with traditional inspiration in artfully decorated restaurants. Knowing Italian will tremendously increase your travel experience and cultural understanding of one of richest cultures there is!

PORTUGUESE
Why learn Portuguese?
Portuguese is currently ranked at as one of the world's major languages. If you're thinking about a trip to South America or Africa, Portuguese would be a great language to learn. Portuguese uses the Latin alphabet meaning one less major barrier for many of us! Between Brazilian and European Portuguese there are a few minor differences in spellings, which only sometimes reflect differences in the pronouncing of the word. Portuguese is a beautiful language and learning it will increase your chances of success in many other Romance languages!

POLISH
Why learn Polish?
There are more than 46 million people who speak Polish worldwide. The UK alone has around two million Polish speakers! Tesco carry more than 100 different lines of Polish food, which says it is the fastest growing ethnic-minority range it has ever launched!
Polish includes many words taken from other languages like Russian, Latin, French, German, Italian, and English. It shares some vocabulary with the languages of the neighbouring, most notably with Slovak, Czech, Ukrainian, and Belarusian.

GERMAN
Why learn German?
More people speak German as their native language than any other language in Europe! One in ten books in the world is published in German. The only language markets that produce more books annually are the Chinese and English publishing industries.
Germany has the third largest economy in the world and is the economic powerhouse of the European Union, so learning German will enhance your employment prospects in the global economy and create business opportunities. If English is your native language, or if you already know English, then you already have an advantage in learning German since modern German and modern English both evolved from the common ancestor Germanic language. Both share similarities in vocabulary and grammar.
German is still a leading language of science, literature, art, philosophy and history. Learn German and get to know one of the great European cultures and keep in mind: 100 million people worldwide communicate in German!

RUSSIAN
Why learn Russian?
285 million people speak Russian! It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is the official language of Russia. It is also an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and unofficial but widely spoken language in Ukraine.
It's easier than it looks! Allegedly it is the best language known to man for giving orders and ideal for the nostalgic. It's the royal way to Polish, Serb, Bulgarian, Ukrainian and the other Slavic languages.
The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. The following table gives their upper case forms, along with IPA values for each letter's typical sound:

GREEK
Why learn Greek?
Greek is one of the world's oldest recorded living languages. Greek is conventionally divided into the following periods:- Mycenaean Greek - (15th or 14th century BC onwards)
- Classical Greek - (a.k.a. Ancient Greek) The language of the Archaic and Classical periods of Greek civilization
- Hellenistic Greek - (a.k.a. Koine Greek): The Alexandrian dialect, Post-Classical Greek or even New Testament Greek.
- Medieval Greek - (a.k.a. Byzantine Greek) Official and vernacular language of the Byzantine Empire.
- Modern Greek - the Modern Greek alphabet consists of 24 letters, each with a capital and lowercase form. The letter sigma has an additional lowercase form (?) used in final position.

DUTCH
Why learn Dutch?
Dutch is one of the various Foreign Languages that we teach in our Language Centre. It is a West Germanic language spoken by around 24 million people, mainly in the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname, but also by smaller groups of speakers in parts of France, Germany and several former Dutch colonies.
Dutch grammar shares many traits with German, especially in syntax, but has a less complicated morphology caused by deflexion, which puts it closer to English. Dutch has officially three genders, masculine, feminine, and neuter, but don't worry! It's easier than it seems!
For many of us, written Dutch is the easiest part to pick up; however, there's no call for concern because if you decide to take up Dutch classes, Aberdeen Courses will get your pronunciation perfect and your conversation flowing! Before you know it, you'll be in the road to speaking Dutch!

GAELIC
Why learn Gaelic?
People often ask whether Gaelic is pronounced "Gahlic" or "Gaylic". Scots Gaelic is "Gahlic" (G àidhlig has a long "a" sound) and Irish Gaelic is "Gaylic".
People who speak even just the basics of Gaelic say it's not hard to learn once you get the sounds down, similar to Polish.
Gaelic is alive in the Western Isles and we'd like to introduce you to this wellspring of modern Highland culture to which Gaelic is the key.
When you learn Gaelic with us you will not just be learning words and grammar, you'll be learning the ancient culture, the folklore and the music that is such an important part of the lifestyle of a people. You will be encouraged to learn songs and to read and tell the stories that have been told since time began.
Your teacher will be a native Gaelic speaker, and well-versed in the ways of the people and their history.

Why learn Japanese?
Japanese is becoming an increasingly important and useful language to learn, particularly for business. Japan has one of the largest economies in the world, which is the most diverse in Asia. Japanese-speakers are one of the internets biggest language group; an ideal target market for many businesses! But it's not just about business; the Japanese are keen holiday-makers, study abroad and their restaurants are seen everywhere, so why not dip into a new culture at Aberdeen Courses and learn Japanese today!

CHINESE
Why learn Chinese?
Chinese is spoken by around a quarter of the world's inhabitants and Chinese-speakers don't just live in China; Chinese can be heard across the globe. Chinese is unique with its pictorial writing system. An understanding of its written system opens up the culture of one of the world's oldest civilizations. Speakers of Mandarin Chinese increase their employability in sectors from tourism and technology to international relations. It may seem difficult but most people find that it's much easier to pick up than they thought!

ARABIC
Why learn Arabic?
Arabic is the official language of over 20 countries and there are well over 300 million native speakers of the language. These speakers are largely concentrated in the Middle East, but there are minority groups of native speakers throughout the world. It is also an official language of the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conference, and the African Union.
There are two main types of written Arabic:
1. Classical Arabic - the language of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, and classical literature. It differs from Modern Standard Arabic mainly in style and vocabulary, some of which is archaic. All Muslims are expected to recite the Qur'an in the original language, however many rely on translations in order to understand the text.
2. Modern Standard Arabic - the universal language of the Arabic-speaking world which is understood by all Arabic speakers. It is the language of the vast majority of written material and of formal TV shows, lectures, etc.
Each Arabic speaking country or region also has its own variety of colloquial spoken Arabic. These colloquial varieties of Arabic appear in written form in some poetry, cartoons and comics, plays and personal letters. There are also translations of the bible into most varieties of colloquial Arabic.
There are 28 consonants and three vowels - a, i, u - which can be short or long. Some of the sounds are unique to Arabic and difficult for foreigners to pronounce exactly, though you should be able to make yourself understood.
